Oi Gentileza!
I’ve been in Brazil for three months and life has been so amazing. I am so lucky to have this opportunity and I cannot wait to share the news of my third month!
As summer nears in Brazil, life has gotten so very hot. With days reaching 37 degrees Celsius (around 98/99 degrees Fahrenheit), I can say with pure confidence that 80 degree Fahrenheit heat is no longer “I’m gonna die” heat.
One thing about the November – December time that isn’t about the heat is the fact that Christmas decorations are everywhere. This has messed me up so much, as it’s hot like summer but there’s Santa everywhere.
This brings me to my next point, why are there Christmas decorations when Thanksgiving hasn’t happened yet? The answer to this question is obvious, Thanksgiving is an American holiday and tradition, and I’m not in the States anymore.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, not for the history, but for the food. The culture of food at Thanksgiving makes me love the day more. Although now, I can’t eat the cranberry jelly, stuffing, and pies, I can still think about the idea of giving thanks.
I’m so thankful for the opportunity to study abroad, be able to contribute to WHJE, and share my culture and learn new cultures from all over the world.
Holidays are hard, no matter how far you are from family, and what matters is staying true to the idea of it, like being thankful.
