The Greyhounds squad will be traveling to Ben Davis High School on October 3rd, where the Hounds will have a bit of a sour taste in their mouth from last season, where they fell short last season on their home turf, and allowing the Giants to put up 58 points. The Giants went 5-6 last season, and the win @ Carmel was the first of the Giants late 4 game win streak.
Last season could not be any more different than this season: new coach, new standard. That is a saying that has been swirling around the team as of late. Carmel is currently sitting at 5-1, their best start since the 2021-22 season. After last season’s shocking Homecoming loss to Brebeuf, the Hounds responded well this year, firing on all cylinders Friday night vs North Central. The run game was the heartbeat of the offense in this one, with 5 total touchdowns coming on the ground coming from 4 different players. QB Anthony Coellner only attempted 11 passes, completing 10 of them for 149 yards and 3 touchdowns, continuing his extremely efficient season thus far.
It is no secret that this Hounds offense is special, and after some questions coming into the season on the other side of the ball, this defense has shut down any speculations that they may slow things down for Carmel as the season progresses. Newly acquired EDGE Dane Bathurst, a senior committed to Duke University, leads the teams in sacks with 4 in 6 games. Last season, the Hounds leading sacker had 3 on the whole season. With the addition of Bathurst, the whole defense has been able to take a step up, with senior linebackers Will Massey and Chase Jarred leading the team in tackles, at 27 and 24. But, the Hounds have not been tested too much through the air, with a young secondary that could potentially be the weakness of a team with such high hopes. In the lone loss of the season vs the Trinity Shamrocks, sophomore QB Anthony Lowe put on a show, throwing for 3 touchdowns in 13 completions, and senior WR Cross Watson had 4 rec for 154 yards and 2 touchdowns.
This Hounds vs Giants game should result into some offensive fireworks for both sides. Though the Giants are 1-5, this is a young team working to put things together, in 3 of their last 4 games they have put up 23+ points. They will have to win this game through the air though, considering the Hounds’ stout run defense and starting RB Jazz Coleman averages just 42 ypg. The Hounds should be heading towards a pretty comfortable win, and expect the ground game to be able to take control, starting with Pemberton, all the way down the depth chart. The WHJE crew will be traveling to Ben Davis for this one, so don’t forget to tune into the Friday Football Phenomenon, with Cooper Sanders and Reilly Sweeney on the call at 7:00 only here on 91.3 WHJE.
