Tonight, the Carmel Girls Soccer team defeated the Cathedral Fighting Irish 3-0 and punched their ticket to the sectional championship. Heading into this matchup, the Greyhounds were the number 2 team in the nation (according to MaxPreps’s poll) with a 14-2-1 record and now improve to 15 wins, 2 ties, and one loss on the season. For Cathedral, they were ranked 24th in the nation on MaxPreps’s poll with a 14-3-2 record. However, they picked up their third loss on the season, which is now unfortunately over for them after losing in the sectional semifinals.
Carmel got off to a hot start and they did not let the foot off the gas. Only 8 minutes in, Junior Defender Bella Cueto got a header off a pass from Senior Midfielder Kate Klinginsmith for the first goal of the game, giving the greyhounds an early 1-0 lead. Just 11 minutes later, Senior Adalyn Cameron scored her 35th goal of the season off a penalty kick to extend the lead 2-0 with 21 minutes left in the first half.11 minutes later, Cameron scored again off a penalty kick with 10 minutes left in the first half to increase the greyhound lead to 3-0.
Freshman Goalie Gwyneth Provost was also very active in this game, with several clutch saves that prevented the Fighting Irish from getting on the board. It certainly helped that the Fighting Irish were making costly mistakes as well. Senior captain Alex Behringer had a goal taken away from her after the referees determined she had committed a handball violation before scoring. For both teams, it was a very defensive second half, as neither team was able to score in the last 40 minutes of action. As a result, the greyhounds maintained their 3-0 lead and were able to win the match.
The Greyhounds will play their sectional championship matchup against the Westfield Shamrocks, who they beat earlier in the season 1-0 at home. Kickoff for that game will be Saturday, October 11th at 6:00 P.M. with coverage from Reilly Sweeney and Will Engledow here on 91.3, WHJE.
