Carmel Football is on the road this Friday, September 12th, to face the Trinity Shamrocks. The Shamrocks are the #1 team in Kentucky and will be one of the hardest teams the Greyhounds will face this season. Carmel is 3-6 all-time against Trinity and will be looking to close that gap this Friday.
Carmel has only won once at Trinity’s Marshall Stadium back in 2014, under head coach Kevin Wright. That was Kevin Wright’s last season as head coach at Carmel before leaving to coach one of the nation’s best high school football programs, IMG Academy. With Wright back at the helm of this Carmel team, they’re off to a hot start with a current 3-0 record, which hasn’t been seen since Wright’s last season at Carmel in 2014. Wright is no stranger to Louisville and the Trinity Shamrocks, as he led the Shamrocks as Head Coach in 1999.
Under Coach Wright, Carmel has been hot, beating Fishers, Westfield, and most recently, Centerville. Carmel was firing on all cylinders against Centerville, shutting them out 48-0. The passing game was lighting up the field with Anthony Coelner throwing for 244 yards with completions to 8 different receivers and 4 passing touchdowns. Another 3 touchdowns were added, with Coelner, Ayden Johnson, and Drew Pemberton having one each. While the starters were the stars of the show, with Jake Bellin, Carson Clark, and Spencer Sell each having 1 TD, the backups were able to shine under the lights when put into the game. Sophomore WR Alim Broadnax took his 1 reception 42 yards to the house for the last touchdown of the night, highlighting Carmel’s bench depth.
The Carmel defense was strong all game long, allowing 0 points and rarely letting Centerville’s offense get past the 50-yard line. Sr Linebackers Will Massey and Chase Jarred were all over the field, leading Carmle with 10 and 12 total tackles each. With a beat-up secondary, missing starters Greyson George at corner and safety Issac Nelson due to injury, the backups stepped up big. Juniors Ashton Alfyaad and Denim Madison each had a pass deflection, and Senior Micheal Gosh was able to make a big interception. The defense is going to be a large factor when going up against Trinity.
Trinity’s offense is very similar to Carmel’s, having a mobile quarterback who can throw the ball while also having an elite running game. In the 21-24 loss to Archbishop Moeller, Trinity’s Running Back Jamarion Berry had 18 attempts for 121 yards, averaging 6.7 yards per carry and 2 touchdowns. Through the air, Trinity had 136 receiving yards spread across 4 different receivers, with a touchdown coming from Junior TE Jack Stivers. On defense, Defensive Back Sekou Kamara recorded 9 total tackles and 1 pass break. In the trenches, Jule’one Carney recorded 2 sacks for the Shamrocks.
With 138 miles and a 2-hour road trip ahead for the Greyhounds, they will need to bring their A game if they want to continue their perfect season. Coming off their first loss of the season, however, the Trinity Shamrocks will be looking to get their team rolling again in what’s looking like an all-time matchup at Trinity’s Marshall Stadium. Some Carmel High School students have already decided to make the trip down to Louisville to catch this exciting game. The crowds will be loud and the action will be there as the Carmel Greyhounds take on the Trinity Shamrocks Friday, September 12, at 7 pm.
