For senior Shepard Spidel, the game of volleyball changed the moment he stepped into the role of setter. As a primary playmaker for the Carmel Boys Varsity team, Shepard is responsible for the precision and timing that keeps the Greyhounds’ offense lethal.
“When I started setting, it was probably the most important part of my volleyball career,” Shepard says, reflecting on what has been one of the most meaningful moments at Carmel High.
Looking back on his four years with the program, Shepard finds the most meaning in the bond with his team. This year especially, teamwork has been prioritized and the guys are able to hangout a lot more in and out of practice which really helps everyone to work together as one. His favorite moments aren’t just individual points, but the collective energy of the team. This season feels particularly special as opposed to previous years, there is a goal to achieve greatness as the senior class looks to leave their mark.
Shepard’s goals before graduation are clear, he’s hoping to lead the team to a state championship as he notes that for this season so far, things are going strong. He is focused on leading the Greyhounds to a victory and continues to inspire the rest of the team after he graduates.
After he walks across the stage this spring, Shepard plans to attend IU and continue to play volleyball there with a club team. Whether on or off the court, the teamwork and leadership skills he earned as a Varsity setter have prepared him for whatever comes next. Throughout his career, Shepard has proven that being a Greyhound isn’t just about the score, it’s about the heart and the effort you bring to every set.
